Blackboard LTI 1.1 Integration Guide

Overview

Brainfuse supports Basic LTI tool installation for Blackboard versions 9.1 and above, including Blackboard Ultra, with membership service support.

Note:
If you are using an older version of Blackboard that does not support membership services, please use the Stephen Vickers Basic LTI Building Block instead.


Requirements

  • Blackboard version 9.1 or higher

  • Blackboard Ultra (if applicable)

 

Installation Instructions

1. Register Tool Provider Domain

  1. Navigate to:
    System Admin > Integrations > LTI Tool Providers > Register Provider Domain

  2. Complete the form as follows:

a. Provider Domain Settings

  • Provider Domain: landing.brainfuse.com

  • Provider Domain Status: Approve

  • Secondary Hostnames: (Leave blank or enter "n/a")

b. Default Configuration

  • Default Configuration: Set Globally

  • Tool Provider Key: Provided by Brainfuse

  • Tool Provider Secret: Provided by Brainfuse

  • Tool Provider Custom Parameters: (Leave blank or "n/a")

c. Institution Policies

  • Send User Data: Send user data only over SSL

  • User Fields to Send: Role in Course, Name, Email Address

  • Allow Membership Service Access: Yes

  1. Click Submit to save


2. Create Placement for Brainfuse

  1. After registering the provider domain, locate landing.brainfuse.com under Tool Providers and click Manage Placements.

  1. Click Create Placement and complete the following fields:

a. Placement Information

  • Label: Brainfuse Online Tutoring

  • Description: Brainfuse Online Tutoring

  • Handle: Brainfuse_Online_Tutoring

  • Availability: Yes

  • Type: Course Tool > Student and Non-Student

  • Launch in New Window:(Must be enabled)

  • Icon: Use the provided icon from Brainfuse

b. Tool Provider Information

  • Tool Provider URL: https://landing.brainfuse.com

  • Tool Provider Key: (Autofilled)

  • Tool Provider Secret: (Autofilled)

  1. Click Submit to finalize placement.

Brainfuse will now be available in the Tools Menu for all Blackboard courses.


3. Testing the Integration

  1. To confirm successful installation:

    1. Go to any course in Blackboard.

    2. Select Tools from the left-hand course menu.

    3. Click Brainfuse under Course Tools.

Upon launch:

  • The user will be single signed-on (SSO) into Brainfuse.

  • A Brainfuse account will be automatically created for the student under your institution’s instance.

  • Your institution's logo should be visible at the top of the Brainfuse interface.
